Over Thirty Years as a Trial Lawyer
Jim Roberts is a founding partner of Lewis & Roberts. In a career spanning over thirty years, Jim has been consistently recognized as one of the state’s most accomplished trial lawyers. Jim has successfully handled complex, high-profile cases ranging from catastrophic personal injury to complex financial fraud. He has represented clients in state and federal courts throughout North Carolina and the Southeast, as well as nationally.
Jim has obtained numerous multi-million dollar recoveries in both state and federal courts, including one of the largest jury verdicts for wrongful death in Johnston County, North Carolina. Throughout his career, Jim has dedicated himself to helping his clients resolve disputes by preparing and taking cases to trial. He has been recognized by both his peers and his adversaries as a zealous and tireless advocate for his clients.
Selected Recoveries:
Jim represented six Iraqi families against Blackwater/Xe Services for the infamous September 16, 2007 shootings in Baghdad, Iraq which were described as a massacre of innocent civilians. He also defended actor Jean-Claude Van Damme when the actor was sued by an extra after being struck in the eye during the filming of a movie in North Carolina.
When a forty-one-year-old worker fell to his death due to an inadequately designed scaffold, leaving behind a widow and two small children, Jim successfully prosecuted a products liability action against the out-of-state company which sold the defective scaffold.
When an eighty-year-old North Carolina tobacco farmer lost his entire life savings due to the unlawful conduct of a dishonest investment advisor, Jim successfully prosecuted a claim on behalf of the farmer and recovered his client’s money.
When a minority shareholder suffered damages due to the wrongful conduct of the majority shareholders of the company, Jim successfully obtained a $3.75 million recovery for the minority shareholder following a five-week jury trial.
The above cases are but a few examples of the diverse and complex matters which Jim has successfully handled on behalf of his clients. A more comprehensive listing of Jim’s experience and recoveries can be viewed under the Experience and Writings & Recoveries tabs above.
Today, Jim’s practice is concentrated in the areas of business torts, investment fraud, qui tam, shareholder litigation, class actions, serious personal injury and construction and surety litigation.
